On 21 June every year, the\u00a0International\u00a0Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) celebrates the World Hydrography Day to raise awareness about hydrography and how it plays a vital role\u00a0in\u00a0improved knowledge of the seas and oceans. The theme for 2024 is\u00a0“Hydrographic\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Information – Enhancing Safety, Efficiency\u00a0and\u00a0Sustainability in Marine Activities”<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>in consideration of the on-going transformation in navigation, such as e-navigation, autonomous shipping and reduction of emissions leading to a profound evolution of hydrographic services.<\/p>\n

The Indian Naval Hydrographic Department (INHD) functions under the\u00a0Indian\u00a0Navy\u00a0as\u00a0the nodal agency for Hydrographic surveys and nautical charting\u00a0in India.\u00a0The department has the mandate to undertake hydrographic surveys and publish navigational charts. Till date, more than\u00a0650\u00a0<\/strong>electronic and paper\u00a0navigation\u00a0charts covering the national and international waters have been published for utilisation of merchant mariner and navies of the world. Last year, the department has distributed over\u00a06.5 Lakh\u00a0<\/strong>Electronic Navigational charts to seafarers operating in these waters and has earned a revenue close to\u00a08000 Lakh\u00a0<\/strong>rupees to the exchequer which is\u00a0estimated\u00a0to grow further in the future.<\/p>\n

The department as NAVAREA VIII coordinator, covering an area of\u00a026\u00a0<\/strong>Million\u00a0<\/strong>sq. km of Indian Ocean, shares information concerning safety of navigation at sea through the web portal\u00a0“India WINS\u00a0– Indian\u00a0Warning Information\u00a0and\u00a0Navigation Services”.\u00a0<\/strong>This module provides near-real-time information\u00a0and\u00a0since its launch in Dec 2022, it has crossed over\u00a03.5 m<\/strong>illion\u00a0views\u00a0<\/strong>with an average of over 3500 visitors per day in keeping with\u00a0Digital India\u00a0<\/strong>initiative of the Government.<\/p>\n

The National Institute of\u00a0Hydrography\u00a0(NIH) at Goa is the centre for imparting training in Hydrography and\u00a0is accredited\u00a0by International Hydrographic Organisation for National and International Trainees for award of Cat A and Cat B certificates. Till date, more than\u00a0800\u00a0<\/strong>trainees from\u00a041\u00a0<\/strong>different\u00a0countries\u00a0have been\u00a0trained at\u00a0NIH.<\/p>\n

\u00a0In line with Government of India’s\u00a0SAGAR\u00a0<\/strong>initiative,\u00a0the\u00a0survey ships of the\u00a0Indian\u00a0Navy have conducted various joint survey operations with friendly foreign\u00a0nations\u00a0covering\u00a0an\u00a0area of\u00a089000\u00a0<\/strong>sq. km in the last\u00a0five\u00a0years\u00a0and\u00a0have produced\u00a096\u00a0<\/strong>charts. The department has\u00a0also assisted them\u00a0by capacity\u00a0building and knowledge sharing.\u00a0These efforts are undertaken by indigenously\u00a0built\u00a0survey ships mapping the\u00a0vast\u00a0Indian Ocean Region.<\/p>\n

As a part of the World Hydrography Day, a maritime workshop was conducted at the National Hydrographic Office on – Hydrographic Information – Enhancing Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability in Marine Activities on 20 Jun 24. The workshop was attended by guests and dignitaries from over 25 Indian ports and offices. In addition, this office has been conducting Hydrographic Survey Committee meetings in consultation with Office of Joint Secretary Ports at New Delhi till last year. This year the Hydrographic Survey Committee meeting is being conducted at this office on 21 Jun 24 commemorating World Hydrography Day.<\/p>\n
